Paul Schleyer Obituary

Paul Schleyer, Ph.D., of Ila, GA, died on Friday, November 21, 2014, at home. He was 84. He was born on February 27, 1930, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was graduated as the Valedictorian of his class from Cleveland West Technical High School. He then got his A.B. degree from Priceton University Magna Cum Laude, and his Ph.D. from Harvard. In 1951 he married Barbara Kinne, and together they had 3 children, Betti, Laura, and Karen. They divorced in 1969 and Paul was re-married to Inge Venema. Dr. Schleyer first worked at Princeton University, where he pioneered the use of computers in chemistry. As his need for computer time outgrew that department, he moved to the University of Erlangen in Germany. Finally forced to retire from there at 68, he then went to the University of Georgia at Athens, where he was still working at the time of his death. He received many awards, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1997 he was the world's third most cited chemist. Paul was also known for his love of cats, and when at home, always had a cat on his lap or at his feet. He will be greatly missed. Paul is survived by his wife, his sister, Gretchen Schleyer-Bazan, his daughters, and four grandchildren.
His colleagues at the Center for Computational Quantum Chemistry of the University of Georgia, Athens, Georgia, 30602-2525, USA, will be having a Symposium in his honor on February 12th, 2015.
His family will be interring his ashes in the family plot at Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, the weekend of April 18th, with a Memorial to follow at his farmhouse in Newton, Pennsylvania.
