Neal Odel Whitsel

Neal Odel Whitsel, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on November 30, 2025, at the age of 78 in Athens, Georgia. Born on January 2, 1947, in Jefferson, Georgia, Neal dedicated his life to his craft as a self-employed painter. His work was not just a profession but a testament to his creativity and passion for artistry, which brought color and beauty into the lives of many.

Neal's life was deeply intertwined with the love and support of his family. He shared 42 wonderful years of marriage with his devoted wife, Doris Lorraine Burriss Whitsel. Neal had two daughters, Tammy (Tony) Atkinson and Deana (Chad) Simonton. Neal’s role as a father was one he cherished greatly, instilling in his daughters the values of hard work, kindness, and creativity that shaped their lives.

Neal's had ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. .

Neal was preceded in death by his parents, Odel and Lavonia Boyd Whitsel, and his brother, Kenneth Whitsel. Though they are no longer with us, their spirits and teachings live on through Neal’s family, who continue to carry forward the values he instilled in them.

As we remember Neal Odel Whitsel, we celebrate a life full of dedication, artistic expression, and devotion to family. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
