Leo Lamar Smith, a dedicated Project Engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025, at the age of 88 in Athens, Georgia, where he was born on June 5, 1937. He was well-respected in his field and known for his unwavering commitment to the infrastructure of his beloved state.
Throughout his life, Leo embodied the values of service and community, which were complemented by his strong faith as a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. His legacy is marked not only by his professional achievements but also by the love and warmth he shared with his family.
Leo leaves behind his devoted wife of 67 years, Mary Carter Smith, whose love and partnership were central to his life, son, Lamar Smith, and daughter, Robbie Eddins, along with grandchildren, Amie (Wesley) Giles, Denise (Steve) Chester, Ryan Smith, Kellie Smith, ten great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren who will remember him fondly for his kind spirit and guiding hand.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd Smith; mother, Gertrude Embrick Greene; brother, Alford Smith; and sisters, Guynita Farmer and Joyce Cowart.
Visitation for Leo will be held on December 2, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Ivie Funeral Home in Commerce, Georgia. A funeral service will follow, starting at 3:00 PM. He will be laid to rest during the interment at Jackson Memorial Gardens in Commerce, following the funeral service.
His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
