James Hope Carlan, known affectionately as Buddy to many, passed away peacefully on July 18, 2026, in his hometown of Commerce, Georgia, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on October 6, 1957, also in Commerce, Buddy’s life was one defined by dedication, service, and the enduring bonds of family and community.
Buddy was a cornerstone of his community, making a lasting impact as a self-employed HVAC technician. Through his years of hard work and commitment, he built not only a successful career but also many lasting friendships and connections throughout the area. His ability to solve a problem with steady hands and a warm heart brought comfort to many, and his reputation for reliability and honesty was deservedly earned.
A lifelong resident of Commerce, Buddy was deeply woven into the fabric of the town he called home. He was a devoted member of Community Chapel, where his presence in both worship and fellowship was a constant source of encouragement to others. His faith was a guiding force throughout his life, and his quiet strength inspired all who knew him.
Buddy’s devotion to family defined much of his life. He is survived by his daughters, Courtney Hansen, Candice Hood, and Cecilia Carlan, who will each carry forth his legacy of love, perseverance, and resilience. He also leaves behind four cherished sisters: Linda Kay Barrett, Donna Jean Osborne, Elaine Smith, and Leesa Shropshire, who shared a lifelong bond with their brother.
His love and influence extend to his grandchildren, with whom he shared countless treasured moments. He is survived by five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews, each of whom benefitted from Buddy’s gentle guidance and kindhearted support.
Buddy is preceded in death by his beloved parents, Clarence Carlan and Mary Anne Barnes, whose memory he continued to honor in the way he lived his life—with compassion, humility, and an unwavering devotion to his family’s wellbeing.
Friends and family are invited to gather in remembrance of Buddy’s remarkable life at a visitation to be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Ivie Funeral Home, 1053 S.
