With deep respect, we remember the life of Geraldine Carithers, who passed away peacefully on June 23, 2026, in Athens, Georgia. Born on September 22, 1936, in Commerce, Georgia, Geraldine’s life was marked by enduring love, steadfast devotion to her family, and a legacy that will be cherished for generations.
Geraldine was the beloved daughter of Nelson Hollifield and Annie Elizabeth Richey Hollifield. From her earliest days in Commerce, she cultivated deep connections that would remain with her throughout her life. Her kind spirit and unwavering determination were evident in all her endeavors and the warmth she extended to those around her.
A proud and devoted mother, Geraldine is survived by her children Susanne Ferguson, Julie Vandiver, and Leslie Nelson Carithers, who have been deeply influenced by her wisdom, compassion, and unwavering support. Her grandchildren, Michael Stephenson, Brittany Stephenson, Melissa Bloodworth, Nichole Lawrence, and Crystal Cherry; several great-grandchildren; a several nieces and nephews. Geraldine’s presence in their lives has been a guiding light, nurturing them with unconditional love and a strong sense of integrity.
Her family circle also included her dearly missed daughter, Rosanne Sanders; her sister, Betty Mize; and her brothers Charles Hollifield, Jimmy Hollifield, and Joel Hollifield, all of whom preceded her in death. Though their absence has been profoundly felt, their memories remained close to Geraldine's heart.
Throughout her years, Geraldine’s kindness radiated through her actions and words. She touched the lives of friends, neighbors, and acquaintances alike by offering a listening ear, encouragement in times of need, and an ever-present smile. Her legacy is defined not only by her familial dedication, but by her gentle spirit that brought comfort and joy to those fortunate enough to know her.
Geraldine’s life story, woven with threads of perseverance, devotion, and love, will continue to inspire all who knew her. The enduring impact she leaves upon her family and the community speaks to a lifetime of graciousness and generosity.
She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
A cremation will be taking place per the deceased wishes.
