Bobby Lamar Shoemaker, affectionately known to many as the "Candy Man," passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, in Commerce, Georgia, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on May 30, 1948, in DeKalb, GA, Bobby lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and a genuine love for the outdoors.
A devoted member of Refuge Church in Commerce, GA, Bobby served his community with unwavering commitment. He retired after a respected career as a Groundskeeper for Commerce City Schools, where his care for the environment mirrored his personal passion for nature. Known for his generosity, he earned the endearing nickname "Candy Man" by giving candy to everyone he met, a small gesture that spoke volumes about his warm and giving spirit.
Bobby is remembered fondly by his devoted wife of 51 years, Vivian White Shoemaker. Together, they shared a life rich in love and family. He is also survived by his son, Bobby (Amanda) Shoemaker, and daughter, Julie (Peter) Yost. His legacy continues through his seven cherished grandchildren: Alex (Brandi) Rafferty, Angel (Frank) Millican, Adam (Beth) Rafferty, Braxton (Hannah) Shoemaker, Kalup Shoemaker, Lona Shoemaker, and Adalyn Shoemaker. The joy he brought into the lives of his family extends to his great-grandchildren: Faith Millican, Tommy Carlan, Grace Millican, Scarlett Rafferty, Madison Millican, McKenzie Rafferty, and Sammy Rafferty, whose lives he richly touched.
Bobby was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver P.E. Shoemaker and Vera May Shoemaker, his brother Bill Shoemaker, and a child lost to miscarriage.
Visitation to honor Bobby’s memory will take place on April 5, 2026, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Ivie Funeral Home, located at 1053 S. Elm Street, Commerce, GA 30529. The funeral service will be held at Refuge Church, 336 Harris Street, Commerce, GA 30529, on April 6, 2026, starting at 11:00 AM, followed by the interment at Riverside Baptist Church Cemetery.
Bobby Lamar Shoemaker’s life was a testament to kindness, care, and community. Those who knew him will forever remember his gentle spirit, his love of the outdoors, and the sweet generosity that earned him his cherished nickname. He leaves behind a legacy of love and a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
