Our HIstory

We are a family-owned, full service funeral home, in the heart of Commerce, Georgia. Ivie Funeral Home was founded in 1913, and we take great pride in continuing to serve the families of our community, generation after generation.

Our furnishings are comfortable, and provide a home-like atmosphere. We have spacious areas for visitation. Our chapel seats 150. Our attentive and caring staff will make everything as smooth as possible at your time of need.

  • Sammy Highsmith

    Sammy Highsmith Funeral Director/Embalmer - Owner

    Sammy has lived in the Commerce area all of his life, he is a graduate of Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science, and licensed with the State of Georgia as a funeral director and embalmer. He and his wife bought the funeral home from John Ivie, and have faithfully served the people of the Commerce and surrounding areas with care and compassion for a number of years. Sammy is a member of the First Baptist Church, Commerce.

  • Sharon Taylor Highsmith

    Sharon Taylor Highsmith Administrative Assistant, Owner

    Sharon grew up in the Commerce area and has lived here all of her life. She and her husband, Sammy bought the funeral home from John Ivie and have faithfully served the people of the Commerce and surrounding areas with care and compassion for a number of years. Sharon is a very active member of the First Baptist Church, Commerce, Meals on Wheels and the Commerce Garden Club.

  • John Wayne Abernathy

    John Wayne Abernathy Funeral Director/ Embalmer

    John Wayne was born in Jackson County, and graduated from Banks County High School, and Gupton - Jones College of Funeral Service. He is a licensed funeral director and embalmer with the State of Georgia. He worked as a deputy coroner with Hall County for 12 years, and Banks County for 2. John Wayne has 25 years of experience in the funeral industry, and is a member of the Commerce Kiwanis Club, and Liberty Baptist Church. He is married to, Wendi and they have a daughter, Lauren.

    Sandy graduated from Madison County High School in 1994, and Athens Tech in 1998 with a legal secretarial Diploma. She and her husband Matt have 2 kids, Peyton and Audrie, and are members of Riverside Baptist Church in Colbert.

    Wes Lewis Apprentice funeral Director & Embalmer

    Wes began working at Ivie Funeral Home in 2017. He graduated Commerce High School in 2008. He is a licensed insurance agent. Wes is completing his funeral apprenticeship and is currently enrolled in mortuary school. He and his wife, Kaelan live in Maysville.
