Sammy and Sharon Highsmith, Owners/Operators

Sammy began working with John Ivie at the age of 18, shortly after his mother died from lung cancer. He graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in 1972, and purchased Ivie Funeral home in 1980. Sammy is a licensed funeral director and embalmer. He serves on the board of directors of the Independent Funeral Directors of Georgia. He is a member of the National Funeral Directors Association and the Georgia Funeral Directors Association. He is a member of Hudson Lodge 295 F & AM.

Sharon is a member of the Jackson County Women in Business and the Pine Tree Garden Club. She is an active member of the Commerce First Baptist Church and is chairwoman of the Bereavement Committee. She serves on the Meals of Wheel Program. Sharon and Sammy are avid supporters of Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society.

In 2001, Sharon's brother, Gary, died with lung cancer, and Sharon was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. Thankfully, she has recovered.

Sammy and Sharon have been closely in touch with this dreaded disease, and understand first-hand the effects it has on family and friends. It is with this understanding and compassion that they serve families in their time of need.
